Oh! To be a frightened child,

With demons by your side.

One for courage, one to fight

And one to help you hide.

Haematite

Haematite

The ancient Egyptians used hematite when carving protection amulets and also used the mineral in burial ceremonies in the headrest so the deceased would be somewhat raised up to face the afterlife. Some inscriptions in the ancient “Book of the Dead” were inscribed with hematite and is believed to have protective properties in the afterlife. The ancient Greeks believed hematite contained mythical properties linked to invincibility.

A mirror-eyed fox totem to grant cunning and invisibility to those who possess it.

A Hokō style figure, bearing the norse run sigil aegishjalmur on it’s chest. The Hokō was traditionally used in Japan to protect young children from spirits which cause illness, by providing them with a new home to live in. Aegishjalmur protects those in battle from pain, and from abuse of power by others.

A grotesque figure, to scare away demons by being disgusting and frightening in itself. In many cultures, the mouth and eyes are believed to be the areas through which spirits enter the body. By making them frightening or blocking them up, in this case with haematite, protection is granted.
